Summary

The previous article argued that AI could relieve the pressure to organize every note correctly by handling retrieval, organization, and analysis. It did reduce that anxiety. But as the experiments expanded, building an increasingly sophisticated note-management system began to replace the thinking the system was supposed to support.

After four months, the distinction became clearer: AI should remove friction around thinking, not the thinking itself. The current approach is human first—write naturally, leave just enough context for a future self, and call AI only when there is a concrete problem to solve. Not every note needs to be preserved or reused; some finish their work at the moment they are written. AI can help reopen a conversation with the past self, but it should not have that conversation in the writer’s place.

Notes

Written in response to a reader who suggested that the tradeoffs in the previous article deserved a piece of their own. The follow-up was postponed until the author’s note-taking environment had settled, then developed from four months of experimentation and a revision of the original Japanese series.

The series title also changed from “wants to take messy notes” to “wants to take notes that feel right.” That change reflects the article’s central realization: messiness was never the goal. The goal was to keep thinking without becoming tense about how every note should be managed.
